Golden Rasbora (Rasboroides vaterifloris)

Golden Rasbora is a beautiful freshwater fish endemic to Sri Lanka and classified by the IUCN as endangered. It grows to a length of 4cm and lives in streams with sandy bottoms and shaded by trees. Commonly found as a group of individuals, it is known as one of the freshwater fish species in Sri Lanka with highest variation of colour.

In its natural environment, Golden Rasbora feeds on insects and decayed organic material. The male is slightly smaller than the female but more colourful. Females lay eggs among plants with water slime. The hatchlings are extremely suseptible to death due to changes in the water conditions.

Destruction of their habitat due to excavation of sand, construction of mini-hydros and deforestation has resulted in declining populations with threat of extinction.
